Hypothetically-speaking

I was ranting to my children about some topic this morning on the way to school, and said "hypothetically-speaking" at the end of a sentence.

"Mommy, what does hypothetically mean?" my dear youngest asked.

"It sort of means 'what if,'" I reply.

"Then why don't they call it 'whatifthetically?"

Good point. Heh.
